Sites That Disseminate Media Releases, Some FREE, Some "Affordable" This list is reproduced from first edition of The Frugal Book Promoter and was updated on 3/06/07 Many of these sites offer tutorials in writing media releases. You will also find step-by-step (right down to the font and spacing!) directions for writing a release in The Frugal Book Promoter: How to Do What Your Publisher Won't. Be aware that many of these sites require your address to login and many of those will not accept PO Boxes. Almost all require a phone number.

There is a $30 charge. www.prleap.com (One of the easiest to negotiate but requires your phone number but they started charging for their minimum service January, 2008.) www.prweb.com (This site no longer offers free service.) www.webwire.com (If you are submitting a release for a minor event and only want the free service, you may have time getting it for free!) http://www.24-7pressrelease.com/ (Bills itself as "affordable." sites.http://www.epressreleases.org/index.htm
(One of the easiest sites to use.)
http://www.prnuke.com/
(This site
feels as if you can post articles as well as media releases and
is a bit hard to get signed up on. It is relatively easier after
you've once collected your password.)
http://www.theopenpress.com/index.php?a=book
(Registration not available because of a
hacker. The site may be back up soon. Information entered
3/7/07.) http://www.fastpitch.com (I liked that those who post can choose some of the media outlets they provide. That his requires an upgrade may well be worth it for a major, truly newsworthy event.)
Sites Where You Can Post Info on Your Book at No Cost www.authorsden.com , For a fee you can upgrade to include newsletter services and more. See what I've done at www.authorsden.com/carolynhowardjohnson www.booktour.com I like this one because when you sign up, you can get notices of author events, etc. that are happening in your neighborhood. www.goodreads.com So far, it appears they have no way to read all the friends you might collect as part of the social network except by individual post. www.librarything.com Includes an RSS feed that you can place on blogs, etc.
www.shelfari.com So far, it appears they have no way to read all the friends you might collect as part of the social network except by individual post. www.google.com has a free calendar that you can list your events on and then feed it to your Web site, blogs and other places where you hang out. In addition you can use all the social networks like LinkedIn.com, MySpace.com, Facebook.com, and others.
Sites the Disseminate Content (Articles) for the Use of the Media Also Called Content Providers Letting your articles, essays, humor and more work for you rather than moldering in a drawer can be good business for an author. Here are some sites that cater to those with a need for content. The author supplies the article complete with byline and a tagline that includes a pitch and web address and an editor searching for just such an article may use it. Each works in a slightly different way so you'll want to explore them to see where your material fits best.
